Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC)’s vision is that we become a fully inclusive outdoor organization, committed to increasing access to and engagement with the outdoors for all people, with leadership, activities, and participants reflective of the diverse communities we serve.

The outdoors is for everyone. As a nearly 150-year-old organization, AMC acknowledges our history of exclusionary practices rooted in policies, values, traditions, and physical infrastructure. Today, we are critically assessing what we do, how we do it, and what assumptions underlie ‘the way things are.’ As a leader in the conservation and recreation communities, AMC hopes to set an example for inclusive and equitable practices while working with and learning from our partners and peers. We know that our mission cannot succeed without engaging a broader community of people from wide-ranging backgrounds and experiences who love and want to care for the outdoors. We rely on a cross-organizational DEI Committee that includes staff and volunteers, alongside a Board of Directors DEI committee to help us identify opportunities for improvement and learning. Constructive feedback from our community is welcome and will help shape the work we do going forward.

Three Mile Island Camp (TMI) shares the AMC’s commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.  TMI has cabins that are specially designed to be accessible by campers with limited mobility, along with bathrooms and a dining areas accessible by ramps.  TMI staff recruitment and hiring actively seeks staff from diverse backgrounds, and everyone participates in DEI training at the start of each season.  The TMI volunteer Committee, which oversees camp operations, as well as volunteer campers, discuss DEI issues throughout the year and attend training offered by AMC.

Additional TMI DEI resources include a Language Reference Guide, a Resource Guide and a recent article, all developed by AMC staff and volunteers.
